Fast Fashion has caused significant changes in the way we as consumers shop for clothes. The mass rates and speed of production yields product that are cheap, low quality, and only worn a few times before being discarded. The rapid turnover of clothing is extremely wasteful and ultimately contributes greatly to the amount of landfill we have. Furthermore, due to the nature of the materials used, the disposal of the textiles poses as a major problem. On top of that, harmful chemicals used to produce the clothing are released into our soil and waterways.

Breaking the cycle is necessary- and here’s how you can do it.

  1. Choose Quality over Quantity. Why buy a bunch of poorly made shirts that won’t last a long time, rather than investing in a well-made and timeless piece? Carefully select items that you know will last you and that you can wear time after time.
  2. Support Sustainable Brands: Making decisions to shop from brands that uphold both ethical and sustainable practices is key for combatting fast fashion.
  3. Go Thrifting: Visit second hand and vintage stores to find a wide variety and selection of pre-loved pieces. Taking part in thrifting allows for the longevity of pieces and lessens the demand for new production of clothing.
  4. Take Proper Care of Your Clothes: To extend the lifespan of anything, proper love and care need to be shown. Be gentle and properly wash and store your clothes. Also you don’t have to throw something out just because it rips! There are many options, like asking grandma for help sewing it back up. I know I do!
  5. Stay Educated: Staying informed about the current state of the environment and how much fast fashion impacts pollution should be enough of an incentive to take a step back and reconsider where you are shopping.

Every step matters, so how will you contribute to breaking the cycle of fast fashion?
